Welcome to our first blog post of 2018 here at Lisburn Hearing, we hope the New Year is treating you well so far. Today we thought we would share with you some information on the effect hearing loss can have on your cognitive skills and your memory if left to go unchecked.

Large Number Of People Over 50 Suffer From Hearing Loss

Hearing Loss An Issue For ManyHearing loss can be an unfortunate by-product of the ageing process, your ears have been subjected to a great deal of noise over the years and it is a fact that most peoples hearing eventually gets worse. Statistics show us that more than 40% of people over 50 suffer from some degree of hearing loss and this increases to 70% for the over 70`s.

Hearing loss is not just a problem you can view on its own as it can bring on a whole set of issues for people. For many people a loss of hearing can lead to them becoming isolated from their friends, family and work colleagues, which can in turn sometimes lead to depression and various mental health issues. There are studies that also show that this isolation can lead to an increase in the chances of someone developing dementia.

10 Years Before Seeking Help

Looking at the problems that hearing loss can bring you would think that people would be only too keen to get this fixed as soon as possible, however research has shown that the average person leaves it for 10 years before seeking help!! In fact, in the UK only around 40% of the people who need hearing aids actually have them, which means there are 60% of people walking around out there who could make their life easier and better by getting hearing aids fitted.

We believe that there are two main reasons for this. One reason is that some people think there is still a stigma attached to wearing a hearing aid and that they would feel uncomfortable wearing one in public. The other reason is that they just don`t realise that their hearing is deteriorating.
