People Who Suffer From Hearing Loss Are 4 Times More Likely To Be Out Of Work

The charity Action on Hearing Loss have stated that people with hearing loss are finding it extremely difficult to find work, and they claim that you are 4 times more likely to be unemployed if you do suffer from hearing loss. And in most cases they are struggling to even get an interview never mind get a job, so things can be pretty tough out there for people who suffer this disability.

People with hearing loss often get support through the government in the UK, with the Welsh government saying they offer various degrees of support which include access to interpreters, tutors and specialists. Richard Williams of Action on Hearing Loss spoke on the situation in Wales saying:

"When you think that 1 in 6 of the welsh population has hearing loss - every family has someone in their family who has hearing loss and it tends to happen with age. The workforce in Wales is an ageing workforce so hearing loss is something we're going to have to get used to in our workplaces."

As you can see the proportion of people who suffer from some degree of hearing loss in the UK is very high, and the percentage is only going to get higher as the population ages, so it is of huge importance that the government and all the applicable agencies are proactive in dealing with this issue, giving support both in helping the hard of hearing get interviews and finding work, but also ensuring that structures are in place in all workplaces so that they can do their job to the best of their ability. This is certainly an issue that is not going to go away any time soon.
